Co-Work

Semi-public Workstations

The internet has allowed for business to be conducted outside the normal office environment. Cafes are now crammed morning-to-night with mobile workers and their laptops. Lack of work space, outlets, and safe storage are some of the many problems in this makeshift work area. However, this informal setting continues to be more and more desirable. Co-Work re-proportions this informal work space by creating an easily modulated and tesselating table complete with features that streamline the work environment. Co-Work is highly adaptable to the user’s demands while working in conjunction with the cafe’s own concerns and market.

Problems Identified in Cafe Environment:

Lost revenue due to lack of seating for short- term customers.
Solitary tables inhibit meetings and collaborative work.
Square footage is lost in attempt to afford workers personal space between tables.
Inefficient use of space due to table shape and proportion.
Blocked pathways due to cords and personal bags.
Cluttered work area due to personal items that must stay on hand.

Investigation and Ideation: Explored various problem-solving concepts, including:
Flexible seating / adjustability / clearing the workspace / creating storage / modularity
/ cable management / separating the workspace from food and beverage space

During ideation on tessellating forms, I recognized that a kinked rectangle, with angles of 90 and 120 degrees could be modulated to form various elegant combinations of table groupings as well as being ergonomically and spatially efficient.

The work surface is a Translucent polycarbonate. This allows the user to keep personal items stored below in view. This second level allows easy access to those items, such as cell phones, reading material, and hard drives, and clears the desktop workspace for more efficient use.

Co-Work provides solutions that meet the needs of both the business owner and the consumer by creating a modern, efficient work space for a casual work environment.
